Kids Are Weird

I Pinched That Kid!

I Pinched That Kid!

My husband and I have 13 wonderful grandchildren. We enjoy taking each of them one at a time to spend a week alone with us. When Gino was three years old it was his turn for a visit. He happened to be there on July 4th so we took him to Independence Day at the Park. Booths were set up for games, arts and crafts, and food. Later in the day a country band was going to set up on the outdoor stage and perform for us, followed by fireworks across the lake.

Gino was having a grand time but after awhile became bored and cranky. We decided to go over to the playground and let him play with other children. At first he was the only child on the curvy slide. I carefully watched him climb the steep stairs and stood below him just in case he slipped. Then as he slid down the slide I would run to the end to catch him. We continued this for a few minutes before another boy close to Gino’s age joined us. The child’s parents watched us from their blanket on the ground a few feet away. I openly state that this child was very aggressive. He didn’t want to take his turn at all. He’d run from the end of the slide, hurriedly climb the steps behind Gino and try pushing him aside so that he could go ahead of him. Gino comes from a family of six boys and knows very well how to stand his ground and defend himself. So, I was surprised when I watched him let the boy pass him up a few times and take a second turn.

It was the night after Halloween. We were having a nice family dinner, talking about what had happened at school and at work, when my 5 year old daughter Lydia said “Guess what happened to Nick!” It’s her favorite way to grab my attention. And after she makes sure she has succeeded again, she continues eagerly: “Nick left some candy by his bed and at night when he was asleep, a candy fairy came, took the candy and left some money on his nightstand!!!”
